Short News October: Social Media

In October 2026, the major social media platforms unveiled a number of new features. LinkedIn aims to strengthen connections between users, Instagram is expanding its creative tools, and Facebook is giving users more control over personalized recommendations. At the same time, TikTok is increasingly relying on artificial intelligence in its ad planning.

We’ll highlight which developments are particularly interesting and what they mean for businesses and social media managers.

LinkedIn Is Testing a New Network Feed and Expanding Creator Features

On October 15, LinkedIn announced several new features designed to help users maintain their professional connections more easily and showcase their content in a more targeted way.

Of particular interest is the new Network Feed, which LinkedIn is currently testing in select countries. This feed specifically highlights posts from existing contacts and people you follow.

The feed is designed to make it easier to discover relevant content from one’s own professional network. The testing phase is initially underway in the U.S., the U.K., India, and Australia, among other countries. It is not yet clear when the feature will be available in Germany.

In addition, LinkedIn is introducing other features:

Pin comments: Post authors can highlight particularly helpful comments, thereby helping to structure discussions more effectively.

Digital business cards: Users can create personalized digital business cards and share their contact information more easily.

Profile notes: Premium users can save private notes about contacts, for example, to recall previous conversations.

There are also new features for content creators. A redesigned dashboard will help them manage content and its performance more centrally in the future.

What does this mean for businesses?

On LinkedIn in particular, engaging with your own community is a key part of communication. The planned network feed could help bring posts from known contacts more to the forefront.

For companies and corporate influencers, it therefore remains worthwhile to actively participate in relevant discussions and foster engagement with their target audience.

The ability to pin comments can also be helpful for making interesting additions or answers to frequently asked questions visible directly below a post.

Instagram Edits Gets New Features for Carousel Posts

The Instagram app Edits was originally developed primarily for video editing. In October, Meta expanded its capabilities: Users can now also create carousel posts within the app.

The new feature allows users to combine multiple images and videos and creatively design each slide.

Various design options are available, including layouts, fonts, text overlays, effects, and custom stickers.

Some of the familiar video editing features can now also be used for traditional carousel posts.

The new carousel tools are initially available on iOS. An update for Android has been announced.

Why is this interesting for social media teams?

Carousel posts are a popular format for presenting tips, tutorials, and more complex information in an easy-to-understand way.

For brands and content creators, the feature offers an additional way to create such posts directly within the Instagram ecosystem.

This could simplify the production process, especially for last-minute or spontaneous content, because multiple editing steps can be completed within a single app.

Whether Edits will become a long-term alternative to established design programs depends on individual needs. For extensive branding projects, complex layouts, or collaboration among larger teams, specialized design tools remain a viable option.

However, this development shows that Instagram is continuing to expand its offerings for independent content creation.

Facebook is letting users have a greater say in its algorithm

On October 13, Meta introduced new features that allow Facebook users to more precisely control the content in their feed and on Reels.

The focus is on the “Your Algorithm” feature.

This will allow users to directly specify their interests and influence which topics they’d like to see more or less often.

The integration of artificial intelligence is particularly interesting: Instead of simply selecting predefined interest categories, users can express their preferences in natural language.

For example, they can describe which topics are currently of particular interest or what kind of posts they’d like to see less frequently in the future.

Recommendations will then adapt accordingly as users continue to use the platform.

In addition, Facebook is expanding the options for providing feedback directly on individual posts. After selecting “Interested” or “Not Interested,” additional questions can help capture personal preferences more accurately.

What will change for businesses?

This new feature shows that platforms are increasingly tailoring their recommendations to users’ specific interests and current context.

For content strategy, this means, above all, gaining a precise understanding of the needs of one’s own target audience.

Companies should therefore regularly assess what questions their community has and what content actually sparks interest.

It remains to be seen whether and how these new control options will affect the organic reach of company pages in the long term.

What is certain, however, is that Meta wants to give users more options for personalizing their feeds.

TikTok Expands AI Features for Advertising Campaigns

TikTok is also increasingly relying on artificial intelligence. In early October, the platform unveiled several new features for advertisers designed to simplify campaign planning and ad optimization.

The focus is on enhancements to the Smart+ automation solution.

With “Search Ads Campaign, powered by Smart+,” TikTok aims to further automate the placement of search ads. Among other things, the technology helps advertisers select keywords and creative assets.

This is intended to enable companies to reach users more precisely who are actively searching for products, services, or specific topics within TikTok.

Another new feature is Smart+ Creative Selection.

This feature brings together different creative assets in a single approval process. These include existing company content, AI-generated creatives, and content from creators.

TikTok can suggest suitable combinations for a campaign. The decision on which creatives are actually used remains with the advertisers.

In addition, the platform is working to integrate AI agents more closely with its advertising system. In the future, corresponding interfaces will support additional steps in campaign management.

What does this mean for social media marketing?

These innovations highlight that AI is increasingly supporting operational tasks in digital advertising.

For marketing teams, such features can be particularly useful for large-scale campaigns with numerous ad variations.

However, it remains crucial to clearly define campaign goals and regularly review the results. Automation can help with implementation, but it requires a sound strategic foundation.

The quality of the creatives used also remains a key factor in campaign success.

What sticks with you

Social media developments in October show that the platforms are prioritizing different areas.

LinkedIn is investing in connecting its members, while Instagram is introducing additional features for content creation. Facebook is giving its users more control over personalized recommendations, and TikTok is continuing to develop its AI-powered advertising tools.

It’s worth it for companies to keep an eye on these changes and regularly assess which new features might be useful for their own social media strategy.
