Short News September: Social Media

In September, there were a number of updates in the social media space that demonstrate one thing above all: platforms want to make content creation, distribution, and advertising even easier.

AI is becoming more integrated into everyday posting, Meta continues to connect its apps, and Pinterest is expanding visual search into an advertising space.

TikTok lets AI help with posting

TikTok is testing a feature called “Speak to Create,” which allows users to speak their ideas aloud. TikTok then generates appropriate text for captions, titles, and descriptions.

At first glance, this sounds convenient for creators and social media teams. Especially when a lot of content needs to be produced, features like this can make getting started easier and provide initial text suggestions.

Still, the actual work isn’t completely eliminated. A good caption still requires context, the right tone, and a sense of what fits the brand. AI can help with the wording, but the direction should be clear beforehand.

WhatsApp accesses Instagram and Facebook content

Meta is testing a feature that allows users to access content from Instagram and Facebook within WhatsApp. To use this feature, the WhatsApp account must be linked to the Meta Accounts Center. Once linked, users will be able to select media from the connected apps directly within WhatsApp.

The update demonstrates how deeply Meta is continuing to integrate its platforms. For users, this could reduce the need to switch between apps. For businesses and creators, it will be interesting to see how easily content can be shared between the various Meta platforms in the future.

This is a familiar issue, especially for social media teams: content is often created for multiple channels but must be adapted differently depending on the platform. If the barriers between the apps are lowered, this could be a real help in day-to-day operations.

Pinterest turns visual search into an advertising space

Pinterest is expanding its advertising options to include Visual Search Ads. These ads can appear right in the middle of a visual product search. To serve these ads, Pinterest combines search terms with image characteristics and signals indicating search intent.

This aligns well with Pinterest’s role as a platform for inspiration and product discovery. People often don’t arrive there with a final purchasing decision in mind; instead, they’re looking for ideas, styles, products, or specific visual inspiration.

For brands, this very moment can be particularly exciting. When someone is searching visually, comparing options, and gathering inspiration, the gap between interest and a potential purchase is often smaller than when users are simply scrolling passively.

What we can take away from this

September’s social media updates show just how closely intertwined content, AI, platform integration, and advertising have become.

TikTok is simplifying text creation, Meta is streamlining navigation between apps, and Pinterest is bringing ads closer to visual search moments. For brands, this means that social media is no longer just a communication channel. It is increasingly becoming a space for search, inspiration, and performance as well.
