From SEO to GEO – How to Optimise Your Website for AI Search

Classic search engine optimisation (SEO) is the entry ticket, but generative engine optimisation (GEO) wins the game. Find out why you now have to break your content down into “digestible chunks” and why trust matters more than reach today.

AI systems do not read websites the way people do – nor the way classic search engines do. Where Google used to look for keywords, modern large language models (LLMs) today interpret connections and “spaces of meaning”. For companies that means: a relaunch is no longer a cosmetic update, but a strategic investment in the machine readability of your expertise.

The new standard: GEO instead of SEO alone

GEO (generative engine optimisation) does not replace SEO, it adds a decisive dimension to it. It is no longer only about the question “What position am I in?”, but “Am I being drawn on as a source?”.

To feature in AI answers, content has to meet three criteria:

  1. Contextual clarity: AI has to recognise immediately who is speaking, who the topic is relevant to and what expertise lies behind it.
  2. Structure beats volume: “Chunking” is the magic word. Break complex topics down into clear, self-contained paragraphs with unambiguous statements.
  3. Demonstrable authority: Use figures, facts and expert quotes. To an AI these act like anchor points and massively increase how citable you are.

The website as a knowledge system

At Schaller Digital we see the website today as a holistic knowledge system rather than a loose collection of subpages. Using models such as “hub and spoke”, we bundle topics strategically (hubs) and deepen them through precise answer modules (spokes).

Why SMEs have an opportunity right now

The good thing about the AI world: it does not primarily assess media budgets, but subject-matter depth and clarity. Small and medium-sized enterprises in particular can win asymmetrically here by structuring their niche expertise more cleanly than the “sluggish” large corporations.

Is your content GEO-ready?

Take the test: does your text answer a specific question unambiguously? Is it free of empty phrases and easy to extract? If so, you have laid the first building block for tomorrow’s visibility
