Short News July: The Web in Brief

July brought another round of updates showing just how closely social media, search and websites are converging.

Google is expanding Search Console, testing new controls for AI search results, and a WordPress security update is a reminder of how important ongoing site maintenance remains.

Here are the most important web short news at a glance.

Google Search Console now also shows social and video performance

Google is introducing so-called platform properties in Search Console. These let site owners and creators see how social media and video posts perform in Google Search and Discover. Instagram, TikTok, X and YouTube are supported at present.

The new reports cover clicks, impressions, search queries, high-performing posts and traffic trends, among other things. You can also see which search terms people use to find social or video content on Google.

Our take:
The update makes it very clear that social media, video and search should not be thought of separately. Content is not only found within its own platform; it can also build visibility through Google. That makes it more important for companies to plan and evaluate content across channels.

Google is testing more control for websites in AI search

Google is working on new controls and insights for site owners in connection with generative AI search results. That includes a new toggle in Search Console, which should let site operators decide whether their content appears in generative AI search features such as AI Overviews or AI Mode and is used to answer queries.

Google has also announced new insights in Search Console. These are intended to show whether pages appear in generative AI answers, what impressions result from that, and in which countries content shows up in AI answers.

Our take:
This is an important step for companies. Visibility no longer means simply appearing in classic search results. Content increasingly has to be structured, comprehensible and high quality enough for AI systems to interpret it sensibly. At the same time, the question of how much control site operators retain over that use becomes more pressing.

WordPress releases an important security update

WordPress 7.0.2 has been released as a security release. According to WordPress, the version closes one critical and one high-severity vulnerability. Given the severity of the issues, WordPress recommends updating affected sites immediately. Automatic updates have also been enabled for certain affected versions.

Among other things, the release fixes an SQL injection vulnerability and a problem in the REST API that could lead to remote code execution. Security fixes were also provided for older affected versions.

Our take:
Updates like this are another reminder that a website is not finished at launch. Regular maintenance, security updates and technical oversight belong to it just as much as design, content or SEO. Anyone who wants to run a website reliably over the long term should not treat updates as an afterthought.

Conclusion

Above all, July’s short news show one thing: digital communication is becoming more interconnected.

Social media content is appearing more prominently in search. Google is developing new options for AI search results. LinkedIn is making joint posts more visible. And technical topics such as security and website maintenance remain decisive.

It is no longer enough for companies to look at individual channels in isolation. Website, content, social media, search and technology have to be thought through together. That is precisely where the potential arises that becomes genuinely visible later on.
